Check which version of Debian a distribution is based on

I want to download an application from the internet, but the website is listing versions for "bookworm", "bullseye" and "buster". I do not know which version of these to download, as I don't know which version of Debian my distribution two steps down from it, is based on. How do I check that?

If you are on Debian itself, you can simply check with lsb_release -a
or one of the other methods of checking the OS version.
If you are not on Debian, this will simply list the version of your distribution, not the Debian version it's based on.
All Debian based distributions do however store the name of the Debian version in /etc/debian_version
. Use cat
in the terminal to read it:
cat /etc/debian_version
That simply returns "bookworm/sid" in my distribution.
