Why does XDG_DATA_HOME default to ~/.local/share? Why not something less cryptic, like ~/.data? Why did they decide use that path?

Why does $XDG_DATA_HOME default to ~/.local/share?

Why does `XDG_DATA_HOME` default to `~/.local/share`? Why not something less cryptic, like `~/.data`? Why did they decide use that path?
