There's a sha1sum tool in GNU coreutils.

Here's

$ sha1sum emptyfile
da39a3ee5e6b4b0d3255bfef95601890afd80709  emptyfile

Note the spaces and the filename (emptyfile in this case) in the output. They may need to be accounted for in pipelines.
